If you need to find it then it’s best to look in unlikely places.
Here are some places hoarders could be hiding money.
In the refrigerator
As crazy as it sounds, some hoarders do actually hide money in the refrigerator.
Make sure you have a good look on all shelves, in the vegetable trays, and check the door as well.
In the freezer
Similar to the refrigerator, some hoarders choose to hide their money in the freezer.
Make sure to take a good look inside ziplock bags before assuming it’s out-of-date food, they frost over and it can be difficult to see inside them!
In cookie jars
Some hoarders will stuff cookie jars with money and hide it there.
It’s a bit of a cliche, but the cookie jar – especially if it doesn’t have cookies in – is a great place to hide money.
In cans
Sometimes money will be hidden in cans and then these cans will be stored in a garage or in an attic.
This can be a bit of a lottery as hoarders typically have hundreds, even thousands of cans laying around.
In the toilet
Some people hide money in the toilet so lift the lid of the cistern and make sure you look in there.
Also, look behind the toilet and other small places where money could be hidden.
Behind furniture
Some people like to hide money behind furniture, so make sure you have a look there too.
Pull out a sideboard, move the sofa, check behind a dresser.
For you and I, finding a few coins down the side of a sofa is normal.
For a hoarder, they may have been stashing notes down there for years and amassed a small fortune!
There are many types of furniture that could be used to hide money so make sure you check behind and under as many different types of furniture as you can.
Under floorboards
As I previously mentioned, my grandfather did hide some money under some floorboards to pay for his funeral costs, so make sure you look for any loose floorboards that could be hiding some cash.
In the walls
Some people will make a hole in the wall, hide a bit of money and then fill the wall back up.
It’s similar to the hold safe in the wall you may have seen on TV shows, it’s a safe hiding place from intruders, but also a difficult place to find when clearing a home.
In picture frames
Check behind artwork or photos because sometimes hoarders will hide money behind photos or art.
In shoes
Some people may roll up money and hide it in shoes.
If this person is a hoarder of shoes, then they may hide money in one of the many pairs of shoes they own.
In the attic
Some hoarders will store money in the attic.
Usually, the money is hidden in something else such as a can, then the can is put in a box and then the box is put in the attic.
Many people sell their homes without going into the attic.
Don’t let this become someone else’s treasure.
In the mattress
This is one of the classic places people would traditionally hide money when they didn’t trust a bank.
There is nothing quite like the security of sleeping on your money (literally!), and I know from experience that this is a hoarder’s favorite place to store some bundles of notes.
Buried in the backyard
Don’t dig up the entire garden, but if you think that some money may be buried in the backyard, then check there too.

Some people will hide money in the car, but where in the car could money be hidden?
Petrol Can
Some people may put the money in a bag and then hide that inside of a petrol can.
This disguises the fact it’s money and is less likely to get stolen by thieves.
In the glove compartment
Another place to hide money would be in the glove compartment.
Make sure the money is disguised by placing it in an envelope then putting it into something else like a map or a car manual.
This means it’s less likely to get stolen.
Why do hoarders hide money?
That’s where hoarders could hide money, but one question you may be asking yourself is, why do hoarders hide money?
There could be many reasons such as
- Money had been stolen from the hoarder and they are hiding it to stop it being stolen
- The money itself is stolen from someone else
- The money could have been acquired by less than desirable circumstances, such as gambling, prostitution or drugs.
This is not a comprehensive list and there may be other reasons why hoarders hide money.
